Lady In White

There's nothing more classically American than the white t-shirt.
Any variation from a pack of Hanes to a J. Crew cotton v-neck elicits fond images of James Dean and effortless cool.

The best part of this staple is that it's attainable at literally ANY price point and can be dressed up or down to fit the most interesting of looks.

When everything in my closet seems to fail me (please tell me we ALL have those days..??)
I head right on over to the t-shirt drawer. This is a huge pitfall into looking like a bland and frumpy sack.... or also a huge opportunity to step out and use accessories to punch up a plain white t and make it all your own.

I always like to start with a pair of dark wash skinny jeans. Throw on your white t-shirt.

For a Rocker edge:
-chunky necklaces and a statement ring (my preference is gold)
-black leather jacket or fitted blazer
-black ankle booties
-a colorful lip color (think a flattering shade of red or coral... or an edgier pink or magenta)

Bohemian flair:
-brightly colored and patterned scarf
-feather necklace
-moccasins or flat brown ankle or calf boots
-loose vest

Preppy touch:
-pearl necklace with a touch of interest such as pretty pink bows or a floral accent.
-flats in any color you like
-a structured bag in a soft color

If you want to step outside of the "tshirt and jeans" box... I really love pairing a fitted white t-shirt underneath a patterned or floral strapless dress and adding a pair of boots to really update the look.

No matter the direction you find yourself pulled in, having the ability to dress a decidedly unfussy item is what style is all about.

Work the Leather

My go-to staple to complete an outfit is always my leather (or let's be real... faux leather) jacket. Holding true to my frugal deal-loving nature, I found mine at Target a couple years ago for around $30. I'm pleasantly surprised with how it's held up and the more versatile I find it to be, the more I fall in love. With the busy life of a college student, it's great to know that I can throw it on at anytime and it will polish off any look.

A few affordable options:

Forever 21
Target
Macy's (great sale: don't miss it!)

Don't be afraid of mixing it up. I love to see a harder piece with a softer look. Floral, lace and soft fabrics look really great paired with the leather.

When all else fails, I throw on a perfectly worn-in tee, a pair of dark skinny jeans and my leather jacket. You're guaranteed to always step out looking and feeling like a rockstar.

Fiery Red Leather Cocktail
Ingredients:
60 ml Whiskey
30 ml Triple Sec
Splash of Grenadine
Splash of Lemon Juice
Slice of Lime

Combine ice with ingredients in a cocktail shaker. Pour & finish off with the lime slice on the glass rim.
Enjoy frozen or on the rocks.

About Coattails & Cocktails

My inspiration for this blog is my desire to have a high fashion look on a small budget. Who better for this feat than a college student? Enter: me.
I've always had a passion for exploring fashion and trends. I like to push the envelope and try edgy looks. I'm a little bit of every style. Call it Fashion ADD if you'd like... I call it open minded.
I've grown to know that what's quintessentially "ME" is a look with a rock & roll touch. I'm a sucker for black (it looks great on everyone) and have yet to find a studded item I dislike.

My goal for this blog and for my readers is to find a great look and show how it can be done for less (maybe even free!)

Can't wait to get started!...
